Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

Logo refers to the official emblem or symbol of a company or product reflecting its characteristics. The logo embodies the entire culture and tradition of the company. In the earlier days, logo was not considered as part of brand building exercise. However, the companies have now realized the importance of logo. Consequently, logo design has emerged into a big business, particularly in the developed countries.

Logo design is now a full-fledged industry with professionals from the advertising industry and creative professionals driving it. Logo design is not an artist’s job. A lot of thinking, several rounds of meeting with the company’s marketing wings and a little bit of creativity goes into a successful logo creation. Normally, companies prefer the short form of the title or a popular product meant for branding to go into the logo. The logo designers should come up with at least three different logo designs for examination by the clients. It is better to have three different options since they have to have acceptance among the target audience apart from being vetted by the clients.

Logo design is carried out by advertising firms, which have long term marketing relationship with the company. Normally, companies undertake logo design once in its tenure. Logo is not changed very often.

A logo indicates everything about the company, its activities and its products. A lot of thought goes into a logo design. It cannot be created overnight. There are agencies and professionals, who have an expertise in logo design. These firms have at least three rounds of meetings with their clients before evolving a logo for the company. Once they freeze the conceptual logo design, the professionals work on it further. The logo design is then subjected to market test to ascertain its acceptability and its effects on the targeted audience. On several occasions, multiple logos are designed to meet the clients’ criteria. Finally, one logo is selected by the client. The logos have to be protected by copyright law in the local court of law. If the logo does not enjoy the copyright, there are chances that it may be misused by some other company.

Creating a good logo – the foundation of brand building

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

A logo design is a graphical representation of a company or an organization. It is a single unit design which is used for symbolic identification and is used in business cards, letterheads, product packages, sign boards, advertisements and wherever the company or the organizations name appears. The core idea is to create the visual identity by which everyone can recognize the company, product or service.

You may interpret a logo design as a simple visual mark to enhance the image of your company, product or service. In the olden days signs and emblems were created to facilitate easier identification and faster recognition. Families and countries used the crest for others to recognize them. Then came a time when only the big organizations could design their own crest for their visual recognition. In most of the cases a very detailed drawing was involved to enrich the intrinsic design value. Cost was not an integral issue, the higher the cost the better the logo. Then there were the flags, popular because of their large format and easier visibility from far. Castles, fields, ships, coaches etc. found flags as an easier mode of identification from far. Even road signs were easier in visuals as they broke down the language barrier. A visual has no language restrictions.

Nowadays, the core idea is same. Technology has enhanced the quality of logo designs but the basic idea is to create a brand identity. Most popular and successful companies say that the simpler the logo, the better. In today’s fast moving society even the time is less for one to establish a visual identity. The creation has to simple, yet stylized enough to catch the viewer’s attention and etch a space for itself in the viewers mind so he remembers and establishes the logo as the identity of the company, product or the service rendered. The use of color and contrasting them properly is very important for a logo to be successful.

It is very important to remember when creating a logo design, that the cost of reproduction is of utmost importance. The more detailed and colorful logos are harder to reproduce and of course they cost much more. Though a good logo is the one which is successful in creating an image for the brand, it is also important that a good logo is the one that looks good in all the places, be it on the company letter head, business cards, packaging material or hoardings, POPs and other advertisements.
